چکیده

In this paper a concept of mean particle size and size factor is presented and an attempt is made to relate the coefficient of permeability with mean particle size, keeping in view the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. The particle size distribution has a marked impact on the coefficient of permeability. The mean particle size and the size factor can be found out from the gradation curve. For the purpose of experimental analysis, ten samples of sandy soils were prepared in the laboratory by taking different proportions sand and siltclay mixtures. The clean sand and clean clayey silt were blended with different percentages of sand, silt and clay to form ten samples of sandy soils. For actual determination of coefficient of permeability a triaxial testing machine having two constant pressure systems was used and the samples were compacted at standard Proctor density. A log-log plot between mean particle diameter and the coefficient of permeability indicated a straight line relationship that holds good for all the sandy soil samples tested. Therefore, a permeability guide is evolved which relates mean particle size with coefficient of permeability.

Determination of Compaction Characteristics of Maiduguri Soil

-Compaction is one of the efficient ways to improve the strength and stiffness properties of soils, such as elasticity modulus and shear modulus. Moreover, compaction decreases soil settlement, improves bearing capacity and the stability of sloped embankments. An optimum water content is required to provide the best path to enter energy into soil and compact it. A constant value of energy appli...

Influence of Compaction Condition on the Microstructure of a Non-Plastic Glacial Till

The influence of compaction water content on the structure has been well known forclayey soils, but has never been studied for granular materials. In this paper the structure of a nonplastictill and the effect of compaction moisture is investigated by means of water retention curvestudy, scanning electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests. The results show thatwhen compacted on...

Investigating the Effect of Zeolite on the Coefficients of Soil Moisture Curve Models in Two Sandy and Loamy Texture

One of the important elements in mechanized irrigation is to know the relation between suction force (matric force) and soil moisture, which is referred to as moisture curve. The shape and coefficients of this curve are influenced by the texture and structure of the soil and can change with soil structure modification.  The most important goals of this study were to evaluate the effect of using...

The Effects of Soil Moisture Content on Reflectance Spectra of Soils Using UV-VIS-NIR Spectroscopy

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of soil moisture content on reflectance spectra of sandy soils with different phosphorus (P) concentrations using UV-VIS-NIR reflectance spectroscopy. Sandy soils with average particle size of 250 μm were used. Investigations were conducted at 0, 12.5, 62.5, 175, 375, 750, and 1000 mg/kg phosphorus application rates. Three soil moisture conten...

Investigation of Shear Strength Anisotropy of c- &phi Soils

Cohesive-frictional soils are widely used in the construction of embankment structures and due to the method of construction, i.e. applying compactive efforts in the vertical direction in these cases, the occurrence of anisotropy in the soil strength and permeability seems to be inevitable. In this study, attempts have been made to evaluate the shear strength of c-f soils through modifying a l...
